There’s no denying that life in the twenty-first century is demanding. There never seems to be enough time to do all the things that need to be done: keep up with work or studies, spend time with family, earn enough money to pay the rent and buy necessities. With so many challenges to cope with, you may ask yourself, “Why should I expend any effort in giving?” or “I’m already scrambling to deal with all the demands and pressures on me. How will I find time and resources to give more?” or “No one gives to me, so why should I give to others?”

In this chapter we hope to show you that no matter what your circumstances in life, you have the ability to give. As well, giving is good for you. It provides the following benefits:

It can make a positive difference to others.

There are emotional, physical, and even financial benefits to you.

It can help you achieve your full potential.

It can bring you more meaning, fulfillment, and happiness.

Gifts Were Given to You
Probably the biggest gift you will ever receive is the huge investment your parents made in you. But they are not the only ones who have given to you. During the course of your life you have received many things from other people—teachers, relatives, strangers. Schools and hospitals were built with the hard work and tax dollars of those who preceded you.

In fact, almost everything you use in your life has been made by someone else. The peace that you enjoy has been delivered by the sacrifice of others. When you think about it, you know countless people who have made a difference in your life – some negative, some positive. Why not make a decision to have a positive impact on the lives of others, even if they are strangers?

Consider the following statistics:

One out of every four people in the world is starving.

As many as 1.5 billion people in the world do not have enough clean water.

At least 20 million people are suffering the horror of war, imprisonment, and torture.

Every few seconds a child dies from a preventable disease.

One-seventh of the world’s population is illiterate.

In the United States, the world’s richest country, 3 million people are homeless each year.

There are also great needs within your own community. In the face of such need and desperation, you have two choices: you can decide to help others and change lives, or you can decide to do nothing and lose the benefits of giving. But remember, when people come together to tackle a difficult situation, they receive far more than they can ever imagine.

The Benefits of Giving
What are those benefits of giving? Here are some of the things you can gain by making giving a greater part of your life:

new relationships

a feeling of security

jobs

good health

a sense of empowerment, pride, and accomplishment

happiness

peace and love

The paradox is that when you give expecting a reward, you won’t receive one. When you give with joy, selflessness, and love, you benefit greatly. The attitude you bring to your giving will reflect the benefits you gain. Parents share their shelter, food, and love with their children simply because they love them and not because they seek their love.

Ultimately, the rewards are tremendous. Yet if you give money, time, or anything else with an expectation of a return on your investment, you defeat the purpose of giving. This can be a negative lesson: you gave and you didn’t feel any better. This lack of “emotional reward” can lead to not wanting to give. Then you lose, as do those you could be helping.

New Relationships
Psychologists who study babies know that they (like all human beings) crave interaction with other humans. In fact, babies who are not nurtured by their parents or other caregivers wither emotionally from lack of bonding. Many of them never recover.

We believe that this is also true of adults. If adults lack stimulating interaction with others, their souls shrink. Really, it’s only through connecting with other human beings that you learn about the world, about yourself, and even about your destiny. After all, other people are a mirror in which you can see yourself. This interconnection enables you to reach your full potential and to strengthen your soul.

The Trappist monk Thomas Merton once wrote: “Souls are like athletes who need opponents worthy of them if they are to be tried and extended and pushed to the full use of their powers.” That’s an insightful analogy, for just as your muscles weaken without physical exercise, so does your soul weaken without its special kinds of exercise. A great exercise for your soul is the practice of giving. As with physical exercise, the more you do it, the easier it is, and the stronger you will become.

Reduction of Fears
Giving can also reduce your fears. That’s because giving promotes social connections, which provide you with greater security.

Do you live in fear of economic disaster? Do you worry about caring for your parents or putting your children through college? Do you worry about losing your good health? Do you fear that crime, war, or terrorist attacks will disrupt the economy and your security? These are legitimate concerns that many people share. We live in difficult and uncertain times, but are these fears real?

Research shows that people who watch a lot of news on television overestimate the threats to their well-being. Why? Because television focuses on news that makes the world seem like a more dangerous place than it actually is. Afraid of the world that is portrayed on TV, people “cocoon,” staying in their homes with close family, and do not build bonds with their neighbors. Thus, they become more vulnerable.

The best way to confront your fears is to begin the process of making a difference. The root causes of “dangers” are often the result of social problems that have been ignored. But you can make a commitment to do what you can to eliminate the conditions that cause the potential crises. By facing your fears and working to change their root causes, you overcome them.

Giving is a key part of this process because giving reduces self-centeredness. It can make you feel more connected to others, and this connection will reduce fear and isolation. Author Robert Putnam’s massive research project, which culminated in the book Bowling Alone, clearly demonstrates the benefits to staying connected with others – for security, health, happiness, and even income.

Have you ever heard of a job opportunity through a personal connection? Have you ever had neighbors help you out during a difficult situation? Has a friend ever cared for your child when you were exhausted?

These are just a few of the benefits that occur when you are connected with other people. The list is endless.

Good Health
Academic research demonstrates that giving to others benefits people physically and emotionally. An article in the May 1988 issue of American Health magazine described a study in Michigan that showed that regular volunteer work increases life expectancy. The study found that men who did no volunteer work were two and a half times more likely to die during the study than men who volunteered at least once a week. The article described other benefits that the researchers measured.

Giving, in the form of volunteer work:

enhances your immune system,

lowers cholesterol levels,

strengthens your heart,

decreases the incidence of chest pains, and

generally reduces stress.

The world can be a different and better place if, while you are here, you give of yourself. This concept became clear to Azim one day when he was watching television at an airport terminal while waiting for a flight. A priest was sharing a story about newborn twins, one of whom was ill. The twins were in separate incubators, as per hospital rules.

A nurse on the floor repeatedly suggested that the twins be kept together in one incubator. The doctors finally agreed to try this. When the twins were brought into contact with each other, the healthy twin immediately put his arms around his sick brother. This instinctive exchange gradually helped the sick twin to recover and regain his health. The babies’ family and the doctors witnessed the intangible force of love and the incredible power of giving.

Living to Your Potential
Rumi, a thirteenth-century Persian mystic, told of a man who walked past a beggar and asked, “Why, God, do you not do something for these people?” God replied, “I did do something. I made you.”

When Rumi wrote these words, he was addressing our ability to choose what we do, our ability to reach our potential.

Most people use only a tiny portion of their potential, and many never find their true gift or calling in life. They never find a worthwhile cause to support, a cause that really means something to them and makes a difference in their lives.

But when you give to others or give of yourself to meaningful causes, things change. You expect more of yourself. You discover new feelings of self-worth. Indeed, you begin to tap into your true gifts and talents. And when you do that, you can achieve your full potential as you help yourself and others.

Until 1997 Azim was a professional accountant. In 199 he also became head of his community’s social welfare board, where he volunteered twenty to twenty-five hours a week. This work led to an invitation to develop a budget for Focus, a humanitarian agency. He accepted the invitation and went to spend several weeks with Afghan refugees in Pakistan.

While in Pakistan, Azim saw many things that shook his soul. One instance, in particular, was his visit to an Afghan refugee camp, where he heard stories about how the refugees lived through war after war. Fleeing from Afghanistan with only the clothes they wore, a few of them had even seen their fathers being killed in front of their eyes.

Some worked fourteen hours a day, making only a dollar a day. Azim met Afghan children who were the same age as his own children. It made him think, “What if my children were in this predicament?” He had heard the statement that we are all interconnected, but for the first time he actually felt what this statement meant. As he was riding back to his hotel in a cab, he sobbed like a baby.

That night he could not sleep. He tossed and turned, asking himself how he could really help these people. Finally, he realized that he would not be able to make a big impact as a professional accountant because he was not passionate about accounting. In this night of grief and pain, he made a decision to pursue his gift of inspirational speaking and writing. That day in the Afghan refugee camp was a life-altering experience for Azim.

As Mahatma Gandhi said, “To find yourself, lose yourself in the service of others.” Azim believes that by losing himself in his voluntary work during that trip, he found himself and got closer to achieving his full potential.

To succeed financially, we must be clear about what having money means to us personally. That may sound simplistic, but most of us have deeply conflicting ideas about money. We are raised with diametrically opposed yet equally persuasive ideas about it – and our ambivalence often paralyzes us.

Self-help gurus on television proclaim money is a symbol of spiritual abundance. The next channel over, multi-millionaires are being packed off to prison.

Complicating things even further, we are constantly bombarded with manipulative advertising that mixes our noblest aspirations with our basest instincts. If you want love, you need to buy this. If you care about your children’s health, you have to have that.

No matter how sane and intelligent you are, society’s mixed messages about money can be crazy-making.

If, like the majority of people, you struggle to get by financially, assertions that money is a symbol may simultaneously ring true and sound like so much hoity-toity nonsense. The gurus making such claims may be sincere and what they say might have a ring of truth – but aren’t they making millions from their books and DVDs? While they have the luxury of waxing poetic about the deeper meaning of profit, you see nothing esoteric about your paycheck. Your mortgage is no metaphor; your struggles to support your family aren’t similes.

“Money can’t buy happiness.” Well, of course it can’t – but it sure buys food and shelter and clothing and transportation and health care and all the other essentials of modern life. Without those essentials, where is the possibility of happiness?

“Do what you love.” “Follow your bliss.” “Pursue your passion.” You’ve heard it all before. Maybe you’ve made a few attempts to rise above the rat race by attempting to live by such principles. But the bills kept coming, the kids continued growing out of their clothes and the refrigerator didn’t refill itself. You had no choice but to delay your dreams and deal with cold, hard economic reality.

When and if you’re able to save enough money to keep your head above water, you’ll spend more time on spiritual matters. You simply don’t have time right now.

This attitude – common though it is – often leads to a cynicism that negates the possibility of spiritual growth and true abundance.

Conflicted attitudes about money lead to self-sabotage. No matter how desperately we may want to end the day-to-day struggles created by financial want, class envy and righteous indignation about economic injustice inevitably warp our vision of financial success.

If you become rich, will your poor or middle-class friends and family mistrust you as much as you now mistrust the rich? Will you spend the rest of your life in the exclusive company of other rich people – people that, at some level, you suspect are inherently bad?

There are many programs and plans of action available if you want to make money. But before any of them can help you succeed, it may be necessary to bring your vaguely defined apprehensions out in the open, clarify them and transform them into a constructive ideology.

Out With The Negative
You’ve read and heard stories about rich people who have done admirable, praiseworthy things – but are they the first people who come to mind when you think of the economic elite?

Sit down with a pen and paper and write down the wealthy people who do come to mind. There may be some on the list you regard as heroes, but many of them are likely to fall into the “villain” category. And even your financial heroes may have flaws that taint your perception of them – if only slightly.

The purpose of this exercise is to purge yourself of every negative thought you have about wealth. These are the thoughts that will keep you stuck. Many of them may be so deeply ingrained you’re not even aware of them. You must bring them to light.

Think about the last news story you read or saw on TV involving a corrupt businessperson. Think of movies you’ve seen or novels you’ve read in which a rich person or wealthy institution was the villain. Record whatever feelings you have in connection with these stories.

Get angry. Vent your most vitriolic thoughts and feelings. When you have exhausted this rant, flip to a separate sheet of paper and write your own name.

In With The Positive

While your negative feelings about wealth are still roiling in you, look at your name – your full name – in black and white. Think about what your name means to you. Think about what you want it to mean to others.

Words like “corrupt” or “evil” may still be echoing through your mind from the rich people rant. Do you want to transfer those words to the page with your name on it?

No, the words you want will probably be the exact opposite – words like “honest” and “good.” Write them down.

Now think about positive things you have accomplished with your money. If you have kids and your money has gone toward keeping them in food and shelter and clothing, record this fact. Think about what your kids mean to you and what you believe they contribute to the world. Put those thoughts on paper as well.

If you have spent money to bring joy or lend support to another person – however large or small your contribution may have been – write down that act of generosity. Christmas and birthday gifts count. Spell out your feelings about the people who have received these gifts and what you hoped to communicate by giving to them.

If you are entirely self-supporting, write about what that means to you. If you receive financial help, record your gratitude to the person, people or organization providing assistance.

It’s your name at the top of this page. Think about the ways money supports who you truly are or truly want to be.

Daily Review
Set the page with your name at the top beside your bed or in a drawer of your desk – somewhere you can easily get to it every day. Look at it daily. If you think of other positive things you’ve done with money, add those things to the page – you might accumulate numerous pages. But if nothing else occurs to you, just re-read what you’ve already written.

You don’t need to dwell on it or build meditations around it. A simple one-minute, daily scan will suffice.

The regular repetition will serve to cut through the conflicting attitudes you’ve acquired about wealth. By doing this, you will be preparing yourself for success using whatever method of building wealth you might choose.

Conclusion

Small acts can bring about revolutionary changes in our thoughts and attitudes. If you want to remove your unconscious barriers to wealth, take a few moments each day to remind yourself that money has already had a positive influence on your life and the lives of those you love.

It’s easy to comprehend that money can mean whatever you want it to mean. The trick is to remember that fact – and to believe it deeply, down in your soul.

Whether you are new to The Law of Attraction or have been at it for years without much success there is a reason why. There is a new consciousness that is being birthed on the planet and the old ways of doing things will not work anymore, especially working long and hard.

Some of the reasons why traditional goal setting, vision boards, affirmations, and other Law of Attraction applications are not working is simply because it is not coming from spirit and source energy. You are connected with the Universe, Creator, God, or whatever you prefer to say that has much more power than trying to manifest something from the 3rd dimension. Additionally, your soul is the gateway to this connection and it always knows what is for your highest good.

Vision boards and other tools are great to use in creating your dreams but understand that there is a much deeper level where true manifestation comes from. When you are truly aligned with source energy that is where manifestations and miracles occur. Your ego tends to get in the way with impatience, what form it’s showing up in, and lack of trust. Learning to go within allows you to connect with the essence of co-creation.

Think about something that you want to manifest that hasn’t happened yet.

How do you feel when thinking about it?

Are you impatient?

Do you feel that life is unfair?

Now notice the energy you are putting out and how it feels. Most likely you feel tense and anxious. This is called resistance which always takes you away from your point of attraction.

Everything you have ever wanted is already here
This is a challenging concept to understand but everything you want is already in the 4th dimension and because we live in on the physical plane we do not see it.

Most people need to see it first before they believe it. This kind of thinking will only cause more frustration and it will take a longer time for things to show up in the physical reality. This can be extremely challenging when you feel anxious and afraid. Many people I talk to want to know how manifest money right away.

The problem in asking that question is that they already do not trust that it will show up and anytime you need something right away causes resistance. When you learn to go within yourself and understand that the money is already there and that divine timing is always working in your favor this is how manifestation from spirit and source energy works. Science tells us that there are waves of possibilities and by the act of merely observing is what shows up in your reality.

Manifesting in the 4th dimension
Imagine being able to tap into this powerful source to manifest from this level of unlimited potential, easily and effortlessly!

Here are 4 tips when learning to manifest in the 4th dimension:

1. Be the observer to your wave of possibility.
If you are having money issues and your focus is on lack understand that you are creating a stronger probability to experience more of the same. Allow yourself to go within and create a wave of abundance by focusing on observing what you want.

Imagine seeing yourself collapse the wave that materializes into the solid form of money instead of debt and lack.

1. Let go of needing it right now.
I receive tons of emails asking how to win the lottery and needing money right away. If you are living in this energy you are not learning how to create from spirit and source. Release the need and learn to let go of your attachment. Once you learn how to do this you will see miracles happening in your life. Tell yourself that what you desire is already there and shows up in divine timing.

2. Asking for your highest good.
I feel we live in a world that is extremely focused on material objects (the big house, fancy car, and big bank account) which can cause even more resistance when you focus on only those things. When you ask for something that is for your highest good, you find that you are manifesting something in its purest form.

3. Focusing on the essence.
Your soul always wants the experience where as your ego wants the material thing. Focus on the essence of what that object gives you. An example of this would be if you wanted a new car and instead of focusing on the new car change it to what this new car brings you.

Is it joy, freedom, or peace of mind? List everything that you desire on a sheet of paper then on the other side list the essence of what it brings to your soul. When you let go of the ego and manifest from this place you will find that there is less struggle, mind chatter, and you create a life that is truly fulfilling.

At one time or another you’ve probably asked yourself, “What is the purpose of my life? What is its meaning? Why am I here on Earth, and what am I supposed to be doing?” Chances are, you work hard, whether you take care of a household or have a job outside of the home.

Your days are filled with seemingly endless chores and tasks like getting the oil changed in your car and going to the grocery store. Perhaps sometimes, when you get tired or stressed out, life can seem like just one long and meaningless “to do” list with a bland retirement and a gold-plated watch at the end of it.

You may have a sense that given the right circumstances, you could do much more than you are doing now. Perhaps you long to make a real difference in the world, to assign meaning to your life, and to listen to the yearnings of your very soul.

All of the great and wise people who ever made a difference on planet Earth heard their souls’ yearnings and chose a purpose for their lives. People such as Gandhi, Mother Teresa, and Nelson Mandela seem to have been driven by a self-defined purpose that they chose for themselves.

Now, we often think of such people with a sense of awe and respect as if they were somehow different from us – better, smarter, more saintly, or more courageous. Sometimes they hardly seem human. But the truth is that the only real difference between you and those people is that they all seemed to have a clearly defined life purpose that they selected for themselves and then embraced with steadiest dedication and unshakeable determination.

You have that very same opportunity as well. Every single one of us has some special gift, some special interest, some special talent, some special way of impacting this world, so that it becomes a better place for everyone. You have the potential to live at the level of Gandhi or Mother Teresa. The question you must ask yourself is, “Am I willing to define, embrace, and hold fast to my divine purpose, prayerfully, persistently, and patiently?” If the answer is yes, then the impossible truly can become possible in your life.

Now, finding and following your divine purpose is different from setting your goals. A goal is a tangible desire with an end result, but your divine purpose is really a way of living. For example, a goal might be to learn to paint with watercolors, but your divine purpose might be to bring joy to peoples’ lives through your art. Another goal might be to get a PhD, but the divine purpose would be to live in the world of the intellect, the world of ideas. Your goals have finite deadlines, but your divine purpose is something that you will be working with and growing with for the rest of your life.

Years ago, a teacher explained to me that if I wanted to fully realize my potential in this lifetime the first thing I had to do was look out upon my world (understanding that we all look out through our own consciousness to see different worlds) and notice all the things that need healing, or fixing, or transforming.

Very frankly, in my world, I see that a multitude of areas where we as a human family need to direct our attention, change our priorities, get rid of the systems and concepts that are not working, and begin anew. Just to name a few examples, I believe that some new thinking needs to be done about the way we take care of our children, treat the environment, feed the hungry, share with the homeless, and provide for the disabled, the elderly, the imprisoned, the hurt, the abused, and the lonely.

The task, then, my teacher instructed, is that after looking carefully at the world, we must pick out one thing that we feel needs transforming, something that would be fun for us to get involved in repairing, shifting, restructuring, fixing, and perfecting. Please note I use the word fun. This is not about martyrdom or great personal sacrifice. It is about focus, joy, and a sense of purposeful possible achievement.

Next, we must take a bold step and make a 100 percent commitment to “fixing” the problem we have identified, followed by devoting our energies, time, talents, skills, and money to transforming that one piece of the earthly puzzle. Even as you’re working toward solving the problem, keep in mind that what is really important is not whether the problem ever gets solved; it’s that you are working toward the solution with dedication and persistence.

We are children of God. But children eventually grow up. And the evolving and advancing you will do when you begin to live according to your divine purpose is part of that growing up.

When you choose your divine purpose, you are framing your life with meaning. You are also taking an important step in your spiritual development: to demonstrate to yourself that you are a divine being and to prove to yourself that you have the power to affect change — that you are bigger, stronger, more powerful, and more creative than you thought.

It was Emerson who said, “Oh Man! There is no planet, sun or star could hold you, if you but knew what you are.” (Now, I know what he meant to say was, “Oh Woman! There is no planet . . .”) There is nothing in the universe that could hold us, if only we knew our true power.

As a Wall Street investment banking executive for many years, I discovered the power of invested capital to create companies, build new industries like biotechnology and the Internet, and create billions in stock market value. But as a business and life coach and spiritual teacher, I realized that our greatest resource is the inner wealth that lies within us — our spiritual or inner qualities such as insight, intuition, vision, and so on. Learning how to awaken and invest this tremendous inner wealth will enable you to reach your goals, increase your income, and find deep personal fulfillment.

Many have heard Russell Conwell’s story Acres of Diamonds about the south Asian farmer who sold his rather rocky farmland to go elsewhere to make his fortune. This seemingly poor-quality farmland later turned out to be the Golconda diamond mine, one of the richest ever discovered. How many of us judge ourselves as not being special enough, not being smart enough, not knowing the right people, or not having what it takes?

Each of us is sitting on our own acres of diamonds, and we can choose to lament the cards that were dealt to us or to recognize that not only are we diamonds in the rough, but indeed, most of us are sitting on a huge treasure trove of inner assets that can be directly correlated to the material world.

Share with the World What Is Uniquely Yours
Each of us has many choices of how to create income. Most of us spend the majority of our waking time in work-related activities. If you look at work as simply an activity that generates a paycheck, then ultimately you will have to find meaning in other parts of your life. Do what you enjoy, but if you enjoy helping people, you don’t necessarily have to work in a not-for-profit company.

Recognize that the experience is more than just the work itself — what you bring to your work is a major part of it. When you begin to value yourself and what you have to offer, you will ultimately share with the world what is uniquely yours.

British author J. K. Rowling wrote the first Harry Potter book with the little savings she had and some public assistance. But her most valuable investment was her great imagination, her ability to paint pictures with words, and her vision of a fantasy world of muggles, wizards, and dragons. Many of Rowling’s friends and neighbors certainly had some doubts as to whether she ever would make any money as a writer.

Yet within ten years, Rowling’s unique Harry Potter brand, encompassing books, movies, and merchandise, was worth several billion dollars, representing a return on investment that dwarfed even those of the early shareholders of Microsoft.

Come from Your Strengths
When I was growing up, I was ashamed of the fact that I looked different from and was shorter than my classmates. What I would have given to have been six feet tall with blond hair and blue eyes rather than being five-foot-six and Chinese American. But when I went to Wall Street, one of the hottest fund managers was Gerald Tsai, a Chinese American who was born in Shanghai.

I discovered not only that it was okay to be Chinese but that there were quite a few advantages to it. I could walk into a crowded room, and while I might have some difficulty remembering everyone, most everyone would remember me. Also, I had inherited a solid work ethic, and one of my gifts was my ability to take in what might be an overwhelming amount of information and be able to not only sort it out but glean insights from it.

Steve Jobs, the founder of three great companies including Apple Computer and Pixar Studios, had the gift of being able to blend creativity with precision, and insight with imagination. Apple, which competed against giants like HP, Toshiba, Sony, and IBM, not only gained a substantial market share but built generations of loyal Apple users. It was the collective investment of the founding groups of both Apple and Pixar that created the inspiration for their products, the impetus for their funding, and the innovations that made them leaders in their industries.

Invest Your Soul Currency
When you use your inner assets and direct them with intention and focus, you need only add love in order to harness what I call spiritual capital, the essence of source energy. The feeling of love, which is the soul’s real currency, is more than a feeling of well-being; it is creative, connective, and transformative. When you invest your spiritual capital, the return on investment isn’t merely monetary; it opens up limitless possibilities.

Here’s an example: My good friend and mentor the late Jay Wells always looked for opportunities to help people. He made friends easily because he was interested in others. Those qualities helped him become a successful businessman. One day while recovering from a routine hospital procedure, Wells started talking to the nurses and other patients and asked why there weren’t any TVs in the hospital.

He was told that TVs were a luxury — there was one in each of the doctor’s lounges, but other than that, the hospital couldn’t afford them. He began by donating a few televisions to the hospital, and eventually this led to the formation of Wells National Services, a public company that became the leader in installing and renting bedside televisions to hospital patients.

Joel Roberts, one of this country’s top media coaches, is another example of investing soul currency. For more than fifteen years, Roberts was the feisty, sarcastic, and often deliberately controversial drive-time radio host of one of the top-rated stations in the country, Los Angeles–based KABC. A music aficionado , Roberts was at a concert standing near one of the huge speakers when it accidentally blew out, causing him to lose almost all of his hearing in one ear and more than 60 percent in the other.

After being at the top of his profession, he suddenly was unemployed. Or so he thought. Today Roberts helps authors, executives, salespeople, lawyers, publicists, and many others apply some of the same skills he used on the air, such as having a hard-hitting message, holding listener interest, and learning how to use news headlines to build a hook.

Living from Flow
Investing soul currency is much more powerful than simply investing money. Soul currency enables us to live from possibility rather than investing from fear and risk. From an open heart, we are able to share and to put ourselves in the flow of not only material prosperity but the deep fulfillment and inevitable right action that love always produces. The message we receive is one of greater connection — connection with those around us and with the collective good as well as a deep inner connection to Spirit that brings us fulfillment and a sense of greater purpose.

As the economy continues its downward spiral, more and more Americans are becoming rattled and unnerved by their financial position. A recent Gallup “Well Being” Poll (September 25) showed that only 40% of Americans are thriving economically, a drop of over 10% in just one month, while 53% of Americans are now struggling, with their basic needs just barely being met.

It seems like now more than ever the value of creating wealth and financial freedom is paramount. But what to do? The real question should be: “What are you here to do?”

We all have a burning desire in us, something that we are meant to do. An obvious example is Donald Trump, somebody who just can’t keep from doing Real Estate. He’ll never retire because he’s in love with the whole process. And of course his success reflects that.

We can only find our highest levels of wealth, success and security when we are doing exactly what we’re meant to be doing. True wealth creation is deeper and more meaningful than simply trying something new, however, and real wealth is more than putting money in the bank. To connect truly and wholly with our destiny we must clear away old habits and fears. We must dare to acknowledge and name those passions deep within and find the best wealth building vehicle that fits with who we truly are.

So creating real wealth begins on the “inside.” Here are a few simple exercises to get you started:

Begin with Your Rumblings
Rumblings are deep inner longings or yearnings—the intuitive whispers that call you. Will you dare to name those passions deep within? You may experience rumblings as a discomfort you can’t quite explain or as feelings that seem familiar. They are primary in identifying your purpose and what you most desire. One of our wealth mentoring students recently said it this way. “What I found truly liberating was discovering that I have a natural fit for achieving success that is uniquely mine.” Ask yourself these questions: Deep down what do I most want out of life? What are the unique gifts that I bring to the world?

Clear Old Habits and Fears
To connect truly and wholly with our destiny we must clear away old habits and fears. A good way to begin is by simply acknowledging what gets in our way. For example, my first rumblings to write Wealth Inside Out were overshadowed by many negative thoughts and beliefs. I would say things like “I’m not good enough” and “What I have to say is not important” and the like.

Then one-by-one I began to silence those inner demons and took action—even when I was not sure of what to do next. Ask yourself these questions: How do I talk to myself about my deepest hopes and dreams? What would I do now if I knew that I could not fail?

Ask for Inner and Outer Help
To achieve wealth from the inside out you will need to cultivate a strong relationship with your interior and seek the counsel of people who can help you succeed. Inner guidance is the secure inner reference place that helps you reorganize around your true priorities. You can access this inner power by asking for help from your higher power, or simply the part of you that knows. Say something like “Please help me find clear direction” or “What do I do next?” and then listen to your answers.

As new possibilities emerge look for ways to make it happen and take action. Whenever you get stuck ask for inner and outer help. Only then will you discover how to become your best most empowered self and realize your greatest dreams and goals.

Don’t Give Up
There may be times when you feel pulled to give up on your true wealth dreams. In fact, without the right support many people do give up and never fulfill what they were born to do. It breaks my heart whenever I see this because there is no need to give up. Help is all around. Finding your place in life (and your true wealth building niche) happens naturally by activating the passions inside of you.

Much like a bird flies south for the winter and a whale navigates thousands of miles every year, you have an internal navigation system for finding true wealth and happiness.

The deeper you reach into the core of who you are, the more aligned you become with your destiny. Allow yourself to be genuinely receptive to the messages life is trying to reveal. As you follow your inner whispers, trust the natural process of life to reorganize around your true wealth vision and around what you were born to do.

Whatever you do, don’t give up. Think of times when you and others have triumphed. Think of sports and how many games are won in the final moments. Following your dreams is an even greater game, one that pulsates with meaning and fulfillment, true success and happiness. There is nothing else like it. Get whatever support you need to realize success, and keep going… keep choosing wealth from the inside out.

Adapted from the book: Wealth Inside out: How I Found True Wealth in Work, Life and Play and How You Can Too by Mark Watson.

Self love forms the foundation of your single, most important relationship – that with yourself. The strength of all your other relationships is exactly equal to the strength of that foundation. To love yourself is not simply a self esteem boosting piece of advice. It is the prerequisite to truly loving others. The golden rule tells us to “love your neighbor as you love yourself”. You are likely to have heard it many times, expressed in different ways, thinking it is about loving others. Look a little closer though and you will find that at its very center is the command to love yourself.

The Mistaken Identity of Self Love:
Let us first dispel some myths about what it means to love yourself. Self love is not about being arrogant, selfish, self-centered or egotistical. It is not about comparing yourself to others to determine if you are good enough. It is not about always putting yourself first. It is not about always getting your way. It is not about always winning. It is not about “only looking after number one”.

Will the Real Self Love Please Stand Up:
To love yourself is to be in awe of the miracle of your existence. It is to accept yourself as you are – the light parts and the dark – and to love them both equally. It is to be willing to receive as much as you are willing to give and do both equally. It is about knowing your values and your boundaries and honoring them. It is about teaching others how to treat you by showing them how you treat yourself.

It is about being kind to yourself. It is about looking after your mind, your body and your spirit – all three. It is about knowing you are worth it, not because of what you have achieved or what you look like or what others think of you, but because love is your birthright no matter what.

What Do You Most Need to Hear:
Take a moment to think of those things you most need to hear from others. Whether it be that they love you, or admire you, or accept you just as you are, or appreciate you, or forgive you. Take a piece of paper and write them down. Make sure to exhaust your list. You will find that what you most want to hear from others is what you most need to tell yourself. You should now have a thorough list of positive affirmations tailor made for you. Repeat them every day, morning and night and you will soon discover a sense of self love and inner peace you never had before.

You Can Only Give That Which You Possess:
It is an obvious statement that you cannot give something that you do not possess, yet so many people desperately love others without having or giving love to themselves. It is little wonder that in time there reserves of love are exhausted and their relationships falter. To give love you must first have love. To have love, love yourself. Only then will you be able to truly love others for the pure joy of loving them. Give the love you wish to experience to yourself and you will find all your relationships transform in miraculous ways.

There is But One Source of All Love:
There is a single, intelligent Consciousness that pervades the entire Universe – all knowing, all powerful, all loving, all creative and present everywhere at the same time. It is the Universal Mind. It is the Source of All Love. It is Love. When you know and understand the Truth that you are one with the One Source of All Love – that your very essence is love – then you will have discovered unconditional self love and unlimited reserves for everyone and everything. You will know that to love yourself is to love the One Creator.

The Benefits of Loving Yourself:
Self love is a win-win for all. It provides you with an inner happiness, confidence and peace of mind that is not easily swayed by outside events and opinions. It enables you to make healthier choices and the best decisions across all areas of your life from your intimate relationships to your finances. It allows you to truly rejoice in other people’s good fortune rather than wondering “why, not me” or even resenting it. It enables you to be more genuinely loving towards others and to be of greater service to the world at large. Ultimately, the more you love yourself, the more every thing and every one you encounter benefits.

In a nutshell, loving yourself is a prerequisite to loving others. Your relationships are only as strong as the foundation of your self love. Release any belief you may hold that loving yourself is selfish or egotistical and replace it with the Truth that your very essence is love, that unconditional self love is your birthright.

When you know that you are one with the One Source of All Love, that you are connected to every thing and every one, you will know that you cannot possibly experience true love without first loving yourself. You will have discovered the Truth that self love is truly the greatest love of all.

Every day in every way we are manifesting the reality of the life that we see around us. Whether we know it or not, whether we like it or not, everything in our life is created by what we think, say, and do.

In the years I have worked with individuals and groups to manifest the life of their dreams with ease, I have come to realize that there are 10 keys that consistently make a difference in successfully and joyfully creating in an effortless flow.

An important foundation to becoming a conscious creator is to recognize that it all begins within you. Your thoughts create your emotions, your emotions lead to the actions you take, and the actions you take effect the results that you see in your life.

Another essential idea is to realize that you do NOT have to do this alone! Our lives are designed to work in harmony, like a symphony, with the powerful creative forces of the Universe that are literally standing by to delight and excite us! As you become clear on what you choose, set your intentions, focus your attention, visualize what you choose as if it has already occurred, expect your desires to be full and fulfilled, express gratitude, and move forward to take the appropriate actions in your life, you are forever free from the habits of worry, doubt, and fear.

When you tap into the power of the Universe to support and assist you in creating the life of your dreams, you almost immediately begin to experience the magic and the miracles of life and living!

Here are 10 keys that will support you in consciously creating the life you love to live:

1. Choose a Higher Power that absolutely and completely LOVES and ADORES you, that always has your best interests at heart, and that wants you to enjoy all the riches of this life.

2. Choose powerfully and positively to create a road map for your success. Create a vivid vision of what you choose to move towards, rather than what you want to move away from. Be definite, clear, and specific.

3. Maintain a prosperity consciousness each and every day. Do not allow thoughts of lack, limitation, or competition to enter into your mind. Allow only the truth that there is limitless abundance in the Universe for everyone, including you!

4. Create and reinforce powerful, positive, supportive beliefs every day in what you think, say, and do.

5. Stay focused on your vision of what you know to be the truth. What you focus on expands. Where you place your attention is where you set your intention.

6. When you choose a financial truth, always state “at least” or “or more”. For example, “I am now earning $10,000 or more each month in passive income.” When you choose a material truth, always say “or better”. For example, “I am now driving my cherry red Mercedes-Benz 500SL with cream-colored interior or better”. Stay open to the limitless abundance of the Universe!

7. Be open to receiving in every area of your life. Expect the gifts, the miracles, and the magic. Expand and open more to joy, love and abundance.

8. Indulge yourself in gratitude for every thing in your life. Every experience, every relationship, every penny in the street is a gift. Acknowledge the gifts and the blessings that are showered on you each and every day.

9. Be generous with yourself and others! What you give is always returned to you multiplied, and this is a confirmation to the Universe that you are ready, willing and able to receive.

10. Be present for the present. When you’re in the past, you’re in guilt and regret. When you’re in the future, you’re in fear. When you’re present in the present, you have the choice to create limitless wealth and abundance.

Make a commitment each day to your great wealth and success, and living a life that is full of rich, wonderful, loving, fun, healthy, abundant experiences!

Yet he came to realize that people are evolving beings, capable of changing and growing toward an ideal. People can always improve themselves.

That is part of our greatness. And that ability to improve ourselves can develop at any moment in life.

Believe You Can Be Successful
You have to believe you can be successful before you will ever succeed. Sounds like a cliché, doesn’t it? But take time to stop and think about it. Where else can you begin? Your beliefs create your life experience — it’s not the other way around. And no matter what you believed before, you can change your beliefs and change your life. It’s impossible to create success without believing — deeply — that you are capable of being successful.

It’s impossible to live abundantly without believing that you deserve abundance. Our education, society, and other forms of mental conditioning are all, unfortunately, more pessimistic than optimistic. How often has someone told you not to waste your time on pipe dreams, that you have to be realistic, that you can’t have what you want? Because we hear this so often and, as a result, believe it to be true, wealth always seems reserved for the fortunate few. Success seems an exclusive party to which we are cordially not invited.

But this is simply not true. If success and prosperity are an exclusive club, it’s because they are so in the minds of people whose attitudes bar their own entry. Every successful person at some point came to believe that one day he or she would be successful.

Your beliefs about success are, no doubt, deeply ingrained, and you have to be open to changing them before you’ll ever succeed. Examine your beliefs to see how they have affected your life. Many people needlessly sabotage themselves because of unexamined “core beliefs” about how the world operates. Marc Allen sums it up in Visionary Business:

It’s important — in some cases critically important — to regularly take time to examine our lives. The first thing to do is to take a look at our past — as clearly and honestly as we can — and discover the important events and influences that have shaped our lives….Some of these shaping events have led to very good core beliefs — and those moments should be remembered, and those beliefs should be encouraged and supported.

All of us have had someone in our lives who saw our potential and supported us in one way or another. We’ve all had glimpses of our genius, as children, and we’ve all had other forces that have sought to crush our genius, through doubt, through cynicism, through lack of faith.

We need to reflect on these things occasionally.

Those shaping moments that have had a negative impact on us need to be looked at, and we need to discover the negative core beliefs we formed as a result. Once those beliefs are identified, they can be let go of. Because they aren’t true — they’re simply self-fulfilling things that become true if we believe them. This is the process of becoming conscious — becoming aware of the forces that drive us, and learning how to act on those forces, how to shape our destiny, how to become powerful. How to achieve what we want in life.

What Are Your Beliefs About Success?
Don’t be afraid to analyze your thoughts more closely; you may be surprised at the barriers you have put between yourself and success, once you think about it. When you realize that you can change even your most deeply held beliefs, you can come to see that not only is it possible for you to become as successful as you would like — in all areas of your life — but also that it’s easy, much easier than you have ever dreamed possible.

In fact, dozens of opportunities appear to you every day. Profitable ideas flash through your mind, but you usually let them slip away without pursuing them with concrete action. The art of self-suggestion, which is discussed throughout this book, helps you discover how to develop your powers of intuition — the sixth sense for success. You already have these qualities, but you may not be fully aware of their existence. You only need to access them — and you can, quite easily.

Succeeding Is No Harder than Failing
For most people, failure has become a way of life. Failure is a hard habit to break; after all, our social climate has given us high expectations, but our social conditioning has given us low morale. It’s a vicious cycle. In order to become successful, we have to understand that success is basically no more difficult than failure. It’s simply based on a different kind of mental programming, one to which the subconscious mind is not inherently opposed.

Doesn’t every failure involve a highly complex combination of circumstances? Consider what it takes to miss perfect opportunities, to misfire every time you attempt something, to avoid meeting the people who can help you on your path of success, to dismiss your ideas as useless when they could lead to something worthwhile, and to continually repeat the motions that lead to defeat.

It’s quite an achievement to fail, and yet the subconscious mind accepts defeat as natural. Throughout this book, we analyze the vital role the subconscious plays in manifesting success. When we understand how to get the power of our subconscious mind working on success rather than failure, we will succeed. It is inevitable.

We create all sorts of excuses to block our success. How many of these thoughts creep into your mind?

Everything was much easier in the good old days.
This excuse is proven wrong every single day of the year. While negative, shortsighted people drone on about unemployment, downsizing, and outsourcing, thousands of small businesses start and flourish every year. Thousands — globally, millions — of people become millionaires each year! Think of the movies produced, the books published, the new opportunities in computer science and Internet media! Think of the parts of the world that are opening to free trade! Becoming successful is not only possible today; it’s actually easier than it used to be. The entire world is ours to offer our new ideas, products, services — whatever gift we have to give. Success depends far less on outside circumstances than on our mental attitude, our beliefs about ourselves and the world.

I’m too young.
Tell this to Debbie Fields, founder and owner of Mrs. Fields Cookies, who was in her twenties when she achieved success, or Steve Jobs, founder of Apple Computers, who made his first million when he was twenty-three, his first ten million at twenty-four, and his first hundred million at twenty-five. There is an old saying: “A youth with a single aim in life arrives early at the harvest.” Youth is more often than not an asset. Lack of experience can be compensated for by boldness, daring, instinct, and originality. History shows that most successful people started out completely inexperienced and learned as they went along.

I’m too old.
Colonel Sanders and Georgia O’Keeffe would disagree. Napoleon Hill’s survey of the wealthy showed that many successful people don’t reach their goals until midlife and beyond. It could be that this is the time of reaping the benefits of a series of earlier efforts, while many others are thinking of retirement. Work does not kill. Idleness, on the other hand, is often deadly; people who take early retirement often die younger than those who keep working. The fact remains that many people begin a second or third career, sometimes the most successful of all, late in life. Age is irrelevant. Your years of experience, even if you have failed, are priceless to you.

I have no capital.
Most people don’t, in the beginning. Money isn’t essential when we start out. A good creative idea or business idea and a positive mental outlook are essential. Everyone in the world has at least one talent, one passion, one hobby that can become profitable if applied correctly. Contrary to popular belief, there is no shortage of money in the world. The money for launching ideas and furthering good in our world is always available.

Poverty seems to be a tradition in far too many families, an inherited trait like the color of one’s hair or eyes, passed down from generation to generation. It’s often more difficult for people whose families have always been poor to imagine that one day they can become rich. The image we get of ourselves and of life in general is often tinged with hopelessness and pessimism, and the role models that surround us are not always very inspiring. But there are so many exceptions to this — look at Charlie Chaplin, for example, one of history’s wealthiest actors. He spent his youth in poverty, wandering the streets of London. The humiliation of poverty and early contact with life’s harsh realities have in many cases spurred people on to great achievement.

I’m not educated.
Thomas Edison left school before the age of sixteen. Microsoft’s Bill Gates is a college dropout. Even though many successful people weren’t educated
in the formal sense, they did acquire an in-depth knowledge of the industry in which they made their fortunes.

I don’t have any special talent.
Many successful people displayed no early signs of being destined for fame, fortune, and fulfillment.
J. Paul Getty said, “I most certainly was not a born businessman.” Many people talk themselves into believing that they don’t have an inborn talent or what it takes to change their lives. They go to great lengths to justify their lack of success. But in reality, everyone in the world has some talent, some kind of gift. Once we discover our own unique gift, it becomes our purpose to develop it, and doing so leads to our success.

I don’t have the energy it takes.
There is often an important difference between those who succeed and those who fail: their levels of energy. Every action we take requires a minimum amount of energy, especially mental or psychic energy. Low vitality inevitably breeds low motivation. This appears to be another inescapable vicious cycle. But all it takes is a tiny spark to ignite the resources of energy that lie dormant within us. The potential energy we all have is enormous. In many people, it is hibernating, waiting to be activated.

Yet at the same time, it takes much more energy to do something we don’t like than something we enjoy. Think of the energy you have and how time slips away when you’re absorbed in your favorite project. When we do what truly interests and motivates us, the energy flows easily and effortlessly.

I’m afraid of failure.
We’re born with two fears: falling and loud noises. All other fears are acquired. Unfortunately, the fear of failure is powerful and widespread — and it is paralyzing. Often deeply embedded within us, it results from past failures, from a lack of confidence bred unknowingly by our parents, and it’s enforced by society’s general negative, short-sighted thinking.

The fear of failure is sometimes expressed overtly but is most often unconscious and subtly disguised. People don’t admit they’re afraid of failing; instead, they denigrate others for building castles in the air, and they scorn dreams and creative ideas. They’re champion excuse-makers: family obligations, problems, lack of time, lack of money. But wouldn’t the family prefer a spouse or parent who is content with his or her work? Wouldn’t time be better spent in creative expression? Wouldn’t creating fulfillment resolve many problems?

Then there are the “if only” people: If only their boss would notice them….If only they could come up with a good idea….If only they had more talent, ability, time, money, or luck….If only they had been born in different circumstances, or under another astrological sign….

Obviously, if you never try anything, chances are you will never fail. But then, you’re not likely to succeed either. Success doesn’t miraculously appear out of the blue. It’s always the result of concrete action and a positive mental attitude. Thomas Edison made hundreds — some say thousands — of attempts before perfecting the incandescent lightbulb. Abraham Lincoln lost eighteen elections before becoming president of the United States. We’re not singing the praises of failure, but we know through experience that every personal defeat can be an education in itself, at least if it’s accepted with an open mind.

All I’ve done is fail.
One underlying reason for many people’s paralyzing fear of failure is that they have already failed, or at least believe they were unsuccessful in the past. Each new setback reinforces this feeling and undermines their self-confidence. People start with one failure and see themselves as losers, and this in turn leads inevitably to more aborted attempts. These failures reinforce their loser mentality, and soon it becomes habitual. They end up believing that life is a series of hard knocks, defeats, struggles, and frustrations.

Why have you failed until now? Maybe you wanted to fail — at least on some level, possibly subconsciously. If the success you’re entitled to always slips through your fingers, ask yourself why you’ve condemned yourself to mediocrity. And reassure yourself that even the strongest, most powerful negative programming can be changed — quickly and completely.

Once you examine it closely, you may be surprised at your inner resistance to success. You may be surprised at your negative inner monologue, which most people relentlessly repeat out of habit. Here’s an important point: Your mind is always working for your welfare — it just may be working for a long outmoded goal. For instance, maybe your high energy or enthusiasm for something as a child brought harsh criticism from your parents or siblings. You very quickly learned to be quiet and restrained. But now, as an adult, there’s no reason to remain unseen and unheard — yet no one told your subconscious mind.

Look at it this way: Our failures should be seen as stepping-stones that bring us closer to our goal. Our failures give us tremendous feedback. Isn’t it true that with each perceived failure we learn something of value? Failure is our way of learning and growing. In reality, there is no such thing as failure: It’s just part of our education on the way to our inevitable success — if we look at it that way.

Your situation will not improve if you do nothing about it. Of course, this is obvious. But then why are so many people waiting for their big break, or to win the lottery, or for some other miracle? Most people live with the idea that everything will magically work out. And then comes disappointment. Success isn’t handed to us on a silver platter; we have to take action, we have to challenge our old beliefs, and we have to risk failure.

We just need to restore the memory of what we already know. — Deepak Chopra

Affluence is the experience in which our needs are easily met and our desires spontaneously fulfilled. We feel joy, health, happiness, and vitality in every moment of our existence.

Affluence is reality, and the true purpose of this book is to give us an insight into the nature of reality. When we are grounded in the nature of reality and we also know that this same reality is our own nature, then we realize that we can create anything, because all of material creation has the same origin. Nature goes to the same place to create a cluster of nebulas, a galaxy of stars, a rain forest, or a human body as it goes to create a thought.

All of material creation, everything that we can see, touch, hear, taste, or smell is made from the same stuff and comes from the same source. Experiential knowledge of this fact gives us the ability to fulfill any desire we have, acquire any material object we want, and experience fulfillment and happiness to any extent we aspire.

The principles expressed in this book relate specifically to the creation of unlimited material wealth, but these principles can be applied to fulfill any desire, because they are the same principles that nature uses to create material reality out of a nonmaterial essence.

All of material creation is structured out of information and energy. All quantum events are basically fluctuations of energy and information. And these impulses of energy and information are the nonstuff that make up everything that we consider stuff or matter.

So it becomes clear that not only is the essential stuff of the universe nonstuff, but that it is thinking nonstuff. For what else is a thought but an impulse of energy and information?

We think of thoughts as occurring only in our head, but that is because we experience them as linguistically structured thought that is verbally elite and speaks to us in the English language – in my case, with an Indian accent. But those same impulses of energy and information that we experience as thoughts –those same impulses – are the raw material of the universe.

The only difference between thoughts inside my head and those outside my head is that I experience thoughts inside my head in linguistically structured terms. But before a thought becomes verbal and is experienced as language, it is just an intention. It is, once again, an impulse of energy and information.

In other words, at a preverbal level, all of nature speaks the same language. We are all thinking bodies in a thinking universe. And just as thought projects itself as the molecules of our body, so too the same impulses of energy and information project themselves as space-time events in our environment.

Behind the visible garment of the universe, beyond the mirage of molecules, the maya – or illusion – of physicality, lies an inherently invisible, seamless matrix made up of a nothingness. This invisible nothingness silently orchestrates, instructs, guides, governs, and compels nature to express itself with infinite creativity, infinite abundance, and unfaltering exactitude into a myriad of designs and patterns and forms.

Life experiences are the continuum in this seamless matrix of nothingness, in this continuum of both body and environment. They are our experiences of joy and sorrow, of success and failure, of wealth and poverty. All these events seemingly happen to us, but at very primordial levels we are making them happen.

The impulses of energy and information that create our life experiences are reflected in our attitudes toward life. And our attitudes are an outcome of and expressions of self-engendered impulses of energy and information.
