It’s a fact that you can learn from a mistake after you admit you have made it, and that you cannot blame anyone else for your actions because you’ll never learn anything from what you’ve done. You have to own up to your mistake and become responsible. Once you’re able to admit that, you can move the focus of the blame away from others.

Making Mistakes in Modern Society
People are taught in school, in their families, or at the workplace that a mistake is something you should feel guilty about even though setbacks are inevitable and part of everyday life. Unfortunately, these same setbacks also seem to explain why people give up in life: they are not prepared to make a mistake and fail. What we need to recognize as a culture is that goals are challenging and setbacks will become more frequent – you must become dependent on your ability to learn from your mistakes and overcome them.

Admitting you’ve made a mistake, for many reasons, is hard. We as people have an implied sense of what failure is: if you fail on a test, you’re a failure, (e.g. if you make a mistake, you are a mistake, etc.). Everything from the things we eat to someone’s grades which are mostly based on test scores are not too forgiving to mistakes.

Life can be scary if you don’t discover an even deeper self-identity based on courage, commitment, compassion, and creativity. You must take risks in life to become a success. Here’s a few ways a person can take a risk that may involve a mistake that they can learn from:

First, put yourself in a situation where you can actually make a mistake (that’s very important).

Next, have some self-confidence. Admit when you’ve done something wrong!

Have courage — don’t be afraid to make any changes that will keep this mistake from happening again.

All of these steps will be covered in more detail shortly.

Four Common Ways Mistakes Are Made
Okay, let’s break down the different kinds of mistakes there are. One of the first mistakes one might make would be a stupid one such as stubbing a toe, dropping a heavy object onto someone’s foot, or tripping over something you may not have seen.

The next common mistake is the simple mistake – these are the kinds of mistakes people make that are avoidable but the circumstances make them inevitable. Say you’re having a get-together and the power goes out because you forgot to pay your electric bill, or you’re an hour late in picking up your date to the dance because you had forgotten an English essay that was due the next day at school. Those examples define what a simple mistake is.

The third most common mistake is an involved mistake – those are understood mistakes that require much effort to keep them from happening. If you arrive to work late on a frequent basis or put off something you promised you would take care of for a friend, you are making an involved mistake.

And finally, there’s the complex mistake – these have complicated causes with no way to avoid them in the future such as making a tough decision that has a bad outcome or a failed relationship.

Every Outcome Has Its Own Purpose and Learning Experience
Some people enjoy making mistakes that at the time feel good in the short-term even though they have long-term consequences. Learning from simple or stupid mistakes is generally pretty easy because you’ll be quick to realize what you did wrong and figure out the correct way of doing it in the future. The lessons you learn from the first two kinds of mistakes, however, are not that deep and you won’t really learn anything about yourself or anyone else.

The kinds of mistakes that someone makes is what defines them as a person. There’s not much to learn when you make a simple or stupid mistake.

Handling complex mistakes is slightly different in that you have to be extremely patient when you make said mistake. You should never try to fix something you do not understand because that will only make the situation worse. Try to talk to someone you can trust about what happened. They might be able to give you advice if they’ve been in your situation before or figure out a way to deal with the problem that you haven’t yet thought of.

When you describe what happened with someone else, you can begin to break down the events that took place in chronological order and define them. Something else might have been going on that distracted you that you might realize when you’re telling your story.

If more than one person is involved in a mistake, hear them out individually. They’ll all emphasize aspects of the situation that stood out for them based on their circumstances which will get you a clearer picture of what really might have happened.

Getting Past Your Mistakes
Once you’re able to overcome the mistake you have made, learn from it and try to focus on your life going forward. Having a sense of humor is one way of combating a person’s self-esteem after they have made a mistake. When you can laugh at your mistakes, you know you’ve finally accepted and taken responsibility for what happened and you will no longer feel guilty or want to judge yourself because of a singular event that occurred. Humor also makes you feel better psychologically and prevents you from obsessing over something that took place in the past.

Most importantly, if you learn from your mistakes, you’ll be able to avoid future mistakes. Mistakes that you make along life’s road will help you achieve your goals and get you to where you want to be.

Summary
To summarize, here’s what you need to do to learn from your mistakes:

Accept responsibility

Don’t think you are a mistake because you made a mistake

Change how you respond to mistakes after you make one

Figure out information that could have avoided a mistake from happening

Figure out if any small mistakes might have contributed to a larger one

Consider alternatives you could have chosen to prevent a mistake

Make some changes that will avoid any mistake you make from ever occurring again

If you need to change your behavior to avoid a mistake, do so

Understand the mistake you’ve made and then laugh at it and move on with your life

Never over-compensate for a mistake you make because the next situation will not be the same as the last one

If so, your beliefs are quietly awaiting your decision to start living proactively today.

Are your beliefs shaped by your experience or do you experience what you believe?
Your answer may depend on whether you live your life defensively or proactively. Defensive attitudes around your beliefs mean that your experience shapes your beliefs. In your life, you’ve experienced X,Y, or Z and you’ve come to believe certain things as a result of those experiences. The end result is one in which we have to constantly defend our positions regarding X,Y, or Z and our beliefs therefore reflect a fundamental limitation in our thinking.

When you have to defend any position, you are limiting your ability to bring full awareness into the situation. This limitation results in being surrounded by challenges, lack, and other forms of negativity. Over time, you become keenly aware of life as something that is lacking the strength to exist on its own terms without having to take defensive actions to protect something that is too weak to exist fully on its own.

Taken to its ultimate extreme, defensive living drives individuals to attempt crazy things that deny life in its most wholesome form as naturally vibrant, strong, interconnected, and mutually supportive. When enough people in a society live defensively, suffering is amplified on a massive scale; wars flare up, cruel regimes deny their people good or other basic services, resources are callously depleted, and the predators — or most defensive of all in that society — exhibit corruption and greed in unprecedented ways.

Proactive living means understanding how your experience reflects what you believe.
Proactive living is very simple. If you believe in love, you will experience love; if you believe in suffering, you will suffer; if you believe in the perfectibility of your fellow human beings, you will encounter others sincerely involved in the process of perfecting themselves.

Believing in anything at all is a very proactive and deliberate thing to do. It makes no difference whether the belief is positive or negative; either way, you exercise some form of volitional decision making regarding the belief, you take a proactive approach to shaping that belief and to holding it.

Proactivity goes beyond creating and hold beliefs to actually testing the belief in the very real laboratory of life. When you ask yourself, “Is my take on the situation accurate?” or “Can I count on my partner to back me up?” you are essentially challenging your belief about the situation or your partner proactively.

Your answers to such questions will determine whether your original belief regarding each needs to be abandoned, modified, or kept intact as is. In this way, beliefs become dynamic, even liberating, rather than limiting. With such an approach, your experience of the situation or your partner will change based on your belief. You will experience what you believe.

Untangling the snarls of limiting beliefs in life and learning to live proactively is sometimes a daunting task.
We would all like to think that beliefs can always be clearly identified. After all, they are our beliefs and how could we not be aware of them? How indeed. The truth of the matter is that we hold many beliefs that are hidden from our conscious awareness. We may subconsciously believe ourselves to be unworthy of happiness or incapable of attaining our goals.

We may hide invisible beliefs within other beliefs and adamantly refuse to acknowledge their existence. We may ascribe our own negative beliefs to others in an attempt to deny their reality within ourselves. We can and do play any number of games with ourselves when defending our beliefs. Talk about defensive living!

Most if not all of the complexity of untangling the beliefs that lead to living defensively can be overcome by understanding a few simple principles about the nature of consciousness:

Beliefs are thoughtforms through which we comprehend and interact with reality.

Beliefs may be limiting and defensive or liberating and proactive in nature.

Holding on to a particular belief is an act of separation: you believe this but not that, or you believe something but he believes something else.

Managing your beliefs grants you the power to restructure your experiences in life.

Belief management guarantees future results you can live with.
You have perfect and utter control over what you believe. Let’s state that again: you have perfect and utter control over what you believe. Because you have the power to control your beliefs, you have the power to control your experiences.

If your experiences are not satisfactory, try to uncover the belief or series of beliefs that is keeping you from experiencing satisfaction. Remember that a belief is only a thoughtform, and just as you can develop your mental abilities along certain lines if you choose to, you can also choose your beliefs or modify or discard them if they do not serve you.

Change any beliefs that need fine tuning. Eliminate the beliefs that keep you from experiencing satisfaction and you will have changed your experience of life. Best of all, your future satisfaction will come more easily because of your willingness to manage your consciousness in this way.

Time spent now shaping your beliefs will result in future gains in all areas of your life, including being able to live your life proactively rather than defensively. It is your choice. Do you choose self-empowerment over self-limitation? Do you believe you can shape your own future? If so, your beliefs are quietly awaiting your decision to start living proactively today.

A characteristic of the modern age is that even though we know we are connected to the big wide world at large, we usually live our lives in our own private little mental ecology with little thought to that big world out there. Our little internal world seems big enough — or is it that the outer world is just spooky enough that we cannot understand the concept of it all?

When it comes right down to it, it is a bit scary and overwhelming. At least inside our own heads, we can attend to things and not give it a second thought regarding the hows, the whys, the whens, or the wheres. It is all inside our head! Yes, the entire world contained within the space between one ear and the other.

How safe! What a relief! Nothing else to consider but what information gets picked up by the senses and remains intact on its journey through our mental filters and conditioning. On both personal and cultural levels, this process resembles a factory of sorts: raw materials in and tidy, uniform products out. The products are destined for use in largely predefined and predictable ways.

The modern collective mind is stuck in the worldview of the industrial revolution. It’s really not how the mind itself and human culture were meant to be. It needs to be changed and the change needs to happen universally — the sooner the better. Yes, believe it or not, humanity really is destined for greatness in ways that we are only beginning to imagine and bring into being. How do we begin?

It starts with an ecology check on a basic personal level. Put your gardening hat on and ask yourself the following questions:

Where do you get your physical food — you know, the stuff you consume to nourish your body?

Are you involved personally in the watering, feeding, and sheltering of the food you eat?

Do you prepare this food yourself — do you clean, cook, and plate up your food in appealing ways prior to consuming it?

When you consume your food, do you appreciate it — do you take note of its texture, aroma, taste, temperature, and other qualities that engage your senses?

If you are disengaged in any way with what you feed your body, you are still living in the old way, the way of mass consumption with little or no personal consequences. You do not need to directly care for, prepare, or cook your own food to be aware. You simply need to be aware. It is in that awareness — and awareness always brings deep appreciation to the table — that your consciousness blossoms into its full potential. Awareness is the field of your creations. Water it with love and fertilize it with what it needs to be healthy. Appreciate the amazing bounty of its creations.

Next, do an ecology check of the mind. As you examine the garden of your life, get in the habit of checking things out. Ask yourself these questions:

Do your thoughts, beliefs, attitudes, and values nurture yourself and those around you?

Does your mental ecosystem promote your goals and dreams?

How does your environment reflect your state of mind — is it messy and disorganized, comfortable and serene, open and friendly?

Are your relations with others balanced and warm or problematic and cool?

If your mental ecology is not what you desire, dream about, or perceive, you need to get your rows in order and think about what seeds you need to plant to have the garden you desire. The amazing thing about working with your own state of mind is that once positive steps are taken in any direction, the weeds of your consciousness wither and die.

Nurturing oneself and others is natural. Simplicity and organization are natural. Balance and openness are natural. You are perfect just as you are. You can become even more miraculous if you give your mind a chance to grow into the full outer expression of its innately balanced inner beauty.

Understand that everything is spirit. Get over it. Accept the fact that you are a multi-dimensional being existing both in time and space and beyond them. Your conscious mind is amazing but limited when compared to the subconscious. Your super-conscious is most amazing of all, being limitless, eternal, and sacredly connected to all of that sublime somethingness that makes up the cosmos.

You do not need to believe in God or follow a particular philosophy or religion. The cosmos works just the same, no matter what you believe. But what you believe determines what you experience in this creation. Grow and nurture these flowers of belief well.

What does this mean, exactly? It means that you are a spiritual being having a human experience. Never forget that simple fact. It means that, to the extent that you practice good husbandry within your own personal ecosystem, you carry that wholesomeness into the world at large. Nurture the body, mind, and spirit and you bestow these blessings upon the world itself. Love yourself and everyone loves you. Appreciate the miraculous and miracles happen all around you everyday. Live your life this way and life itself will be your constant companion.

Green spirituality is a way of practicing sustainability with yourself and the world in general. At this point in time, we all understand that the planet is in crisis — this despite the publicly professed opinions of a few diehards who have vested interests in asserting that it is not. Our planetary garden, so willing to become our Eden, is too dry, too wet, too hot, too cold, too stressed, too under-appreciated.

Human lifestyles, especially in the West, still lend more credence to the idea that humanity is the demanding master of Mother Nature rather than her loving partner and steward. All of the earth suffers because of this attitude. It’s time for a change.

Pay attention! Get back in tune with yourself and the planet in general. Tend your garden with conscious awareness and joy. When you find something that grows amazingly well, proclaim it to your friends and neighbors and encourage them to do the same.

Learn to celebrate life rather than ignore it. If you’re overworked, take some time off to enjoy your family. If you need more money, think about what others lack that you have the skills and talents to supply. If you suffer from ill health or physical limitation, care for someone or something that needs but a good diet and a little love to express its vibrant well being.

It’s time to green the machine of our post-industrial way of life. Green spirituality is natural, wholesome, cooperative, and efficient. Are you ready to plant some seeds?

Marilee Adams’ second edition of her bestselling work explores further the concept of questions and knowing the right questions to ask at the right times. However, Some of the questions we all ask prove to be more detrimental than helpful.

Consider these five questions that you should avoid asking yourself at all times, even though they may still seem natural and familiar. All of these questions have built-in assumptions that can prevent the question asker from being successful or satisfied.

As you go through your day, listen to the questions you’re asking yourself and then wonder whether the inherent assumptions serve you. Sometimes you’ll find that you can be more successful and satisfied by changing your questions.

1. Why can’t I ever get anything right?
This is a bad question to ask yourself because it:

Assumes that one is, was, and always will be incompetent and unsuccessful

Assumes that there is nothing one can do about this “truth”

2. How did I get stuck with this idiot of a boss (spouse, child, colleague, etc.)?
This is a bad question to ask yourself because it:

Assumes that one had no responsibility in contributing to this situation

Assumes that one is good and pure and it’s everybody else who is deficient

3. What dumb thing is he/she going to say next?
This is a bad question to ask yourself because it:

Assumes that whatever the other person says is always dumb

Assumes that he or she never has anything helpful to say

4. How can I’m prove that I’m right (and everyone else is wrong)?
This is a bad question to ask yourself because it:

Assumes that being right is the “end all and be all”

Assumes that ones own point of view is the only right one

Assumes that only one person or point of view can be right and valid

5. Whose fault is it? What is everybody else’s responsibility for this problem?
This is a bad question to ask yourself because it:

Assumes that what’s important is finding a person to blame rather than focusing on resolving whatever the problem is

Assumes that it was only others who contributed to the problem, not oneself

Once a wise master had four students who exceeded all others in ability. One day the five gathered, and the master spoke to the first student, “Tell me what you see when you look into the world.”

“I see savagery. The planet is raped. The world hides from the truth. Contaminating material is released everywhere. There is particulate matter in the heavens and acid rain. The rain forests are being destroyed, and so is the ozone. There is such ignorance and selfishness. The world needs so much correction.”

The master replied, “You are right, and I shall call you Correction, for you by your vision have committed to a world of need.”

To his second student, the master put the same question, “Tell me what you see when you look into the world.”

The second student replied, “Master, I see futility. Nothing can be done to change the ways of the world, though some will repent and call for change. Still, the world is condemned by the acts of man. The sciences teach us that too many people are coming onto the planet, too much destruction has already been done, too little money is provided for science to adequately assist, and there is too little concern for ethics and values. Crime escalates while families decay. Law is lost.

“You too are right, and I shall call you Righteous, for your indignation beholds a corrupt world beyond repair while your heart suffers its pain. You shall be known for your words, and your works will express the sadness of your heart.”

The master turned his gaze to the third student. “And you, what do you see?”

“I see a world needing the restoration of Law. I do not believe hope is lost. I find encouragement in the words of my brothers, for they too recognize the need the world has for a change of ways. It is with confidence that I sense the willingness of man to change. All good government is government of the people and for the people. It is through law and government that change can be effected. The mass will follow the right action and attitude of government. The agent for change exists and is law and government.”

“You also are right. I shall call you Government, for your words forge your observations and become what you teach. You will therefore be committed to a work of law and order through government.”

Finally, to the fourth student, the master put the same question, “And what do you see?”

“Master, I behold only miracles. Life is a miracle. All being is a miracle. Consciousness is a miracle. I behold God in all creation. I sense the beauty of Love in the fragrance of the flower, in the smile of a child, in the warmth of lovers, in the glow of the stars. When I look onto the world, I am greeted with its mysteries. It is with awe and reverence that each day unfolds its beauty. I know that all things are good and that each expresses their good in their own appropriate manner for the moment. I know that which my brothers speak about is but illusion, for only the eternal is real. I will give no power to thoughts of scarcity, of limitation, of need, for all that is truly needed is here for us to behold, to recognize, and to accept. I wish only to give to the world the sight I have been given. For with these modest eyes and senses, my heart is quickened by the glory of being.”

The master smiled before he spoke. “And you, my chosen student, I will call Truth, for your vision is of Truth, and its reward is the reality it sees. You shall go unto man and teach from what you see, for yours is the vision of what is, and all that is possible rests in this peace. You shall be known by all men by your garments of serenity and peace.”

The master, speaking to all, added these words, “To each of you is the blessing of your vision. As you see the world, so the world reveals itself to you. You will know the world by your vision of it. To each of you will go the works of your sight. You will experience life according to your vision.”

Not only is our reality a matter of choice, but so is the power we give it. Only the eternal is incorruptible. Only the eternal is therefore true. All else is inherently false by definition. To be a master, one must begin by acting like a master. To grow, we must give. The old saying “You cannot receive if the cup is full” is absolutely true of the human condition. As we sow, so do we reap. The first step then in self – actualization, is to give forgiveness and care. The old deep mind link memories disappear; the new memories become both the process and the goal.

Do we really need it?

HH: Religious influence is mainly at the individual level. Irrespective of one’s faith or philosophy, transformation takes place within. In a way, that should give us hope. Materially, many have lost hope. However, at a deeper level, faith will sustain hope.

Hope is a contributing factor for religion today. Once hope is lost, one becomes mad, commits acts of violence, participates in destructive behavior, or ultimately commits suicide.

Society is made up of individuals. Because of individuals who have lost hope and behave negatively, there is more and more madness in society today. If their numbers increase, all of society will suffer. If we utilize and understand religious traditions properly, individuals benefit, and so can society as a whole.

Unfortunately, religions today place too much emphasis on ceremony and rituals. This is sometimes old-fashioned and often limiting. What is necessary now is to find the essence of what is important in our daily lives and to connect relevant religious messages, advice, or inspiration with this.

I feel an important factor in religion is to be “God-fearing.” Even though the individual believes he or she has individual power and faculties, a faith in God ensures there is some discipline. Many countries today face a moral crisis, and crimes are increasing. The disciplinary powers of society have conventional methods to control crime, but the individuals involved in wrongdoing are becoming more evasive and sophisticated in their methods. So without self-discipline, some acknowledgment of the spirit within one’s self, and a sense of individual responsibility, it will be very difficult to exercise control. Therefore, various religious traditions have an important, effective role.

What would you say is the essential message of religion?

HH: I believe all major religions teach us to be more compassionate. All religions carry the message of love, compassion, and forgiveness. And forgiveness reflects tolerance and an understanding of the value of another’s rights and views. This is the foundation for harmony.

Perhaps, at a deeper level, our views are transformed because of religious traditions. Religion teaches us some obvious things, but there are some deeper meanings, deeper forces, and deeper influences that it imparts. These widen our view of life. For instance, if an individual has to face pain or suffering, a religious experience or understanding will give deeper meaning to the incident and help reduce the mental burden, anxiety, and pain that are endured.

For example, Buddhists believe in the karmic law, the law of causality, so they know that whatever is happening in their lives is because of some past action, or karma. Ultimately, they know they must take responsibility for those actions. This helps to reduce mental frustration and anxiety.

Even if all religions have the same goal, there tend to be different ideas and areas of emphasis. As someone engaged purposefully in interfaith dialogue, how would you articulate the common ground or the basis for harmony between various religions?

HH: Although all world religions carry the message of love and compassion, it would not be correct to say that all of them have the same objective or beliefs; there are substantial differences. For example, some religions believe in a Creator, and others do not—that represents a fundamental difference.

There exist fundamental differences between the philosophical approaches of the world’s religions. Why did all these diverse philosophies develop? I believe there is a good purpose for these multiple views. Within humanity, there are many different dispositions; and one philosophy, one belief, simply cannot satisfy all. Therefore, the great ancient masters had to demonstrate different philosophies and traditions.

For example, some like spicy food; others do not. Spirituality is food for the mind, and different religions are very necessary for different mental dispositions. For some, the philosophy that the person is nothing and the Creator is most important is suitable. If everything is in the hands of the Creator, one should do nothing against the wishes of the Creator.

If people act accordingly, it gives them a kind of mental satisfaction and moral stability. There are others who approach philosophy with logic. They have a sort of independence or some such power. If it is explained to them that everything is not in the hands of an Almighty Creator but is in their own hands, that really makes a difference.

Irrespective of the different philosophies, the most important point is to have a tamed and disciplined mind and a warm heart. It is unfortunate that today there is so much conflict, division, and bloodshed in the name of religion.

When I was in Tibet, there was no contact with other religious traditions. At that time, my thinking was different. Today, as a result of the many opportunities I have had to meet people from different religious traditions, I am completely convinced that they all have the same potential to produce good human beings. My eyes were opened after speaking with such great people as the late Thomas Merton, Mother Teresa, and so many more. We exchanged deep spiritual experiences, and I realized it is important to come together and work closely with each other.

As a Nobel laureate whose contribution toward secularism is especially lauded, what is your message on religious pluralism?

HH: In India, there are many different traditions of thought and philosophy, including the traditions of other cultures. India is like a supermarket of many religious traditions, and I think that is one of the beautiful things about this country. And because of that reality, religious ahimsa [the doctrine of refraining from harming any living being] has become a part of the Indian tradition. In this, India has set an example for the world. People can live side by side as brothers and sisters despite following many different religious faiths.

This is how the world is becoming smaller and so interdependent. In the past, nations and continents remained more or less isolated. The concept of one truth, one religion, was very relevant then. But today the situation is different. Pluralism in religious faith is necessary and relevant in today’s world.

It is important for me as a Buddhist to believe that Buddhism is the true religion or one truth. It is just as important for a Christian to believe that Christianity is the true religion for him as it is for others. But how do we overcome the contradiction that there is relevance for different truths and traditions?

In reality, there is no contradiction. For the individual, the concept of one truth, one religion, is very important. However, in terms of society and the masses, the concept of several truths, several traditions, is relevant. I’m Buddhist, and I believe that Buddhism is the best. That does not mean that any one of my brothers—whether Hindu, Christian, Muslim, or Jewish—is following a religion of lesser validity. We are all involved in a religion that is appropriate for us.

Today we have the opportunity for closer contact with different traditions, which helps us develop the idea of pluralism and appreciate the values and sanctity of other customs. I learn many valuable things from other traditions. Similarly, some of my friends are also eager to learn from the Buddhist tradition. This is a healthy way to enrich one’s own tradition and develop genuine mutual respect and admiration. I think that’s a sound basis for religious harmony.

What is the Buddhist view of converting an individual from one faith to another? Today, in the West especially, there are many people of different faiths who have shown an interest in Buddhism. What advice would you give them?

HH: Conversion is one-sided when it is without alternatives and is coerced. This is wrong. Voluntary conversion is when an individual makes a choice according to his mental disposition. This seems more suitable to me. Sometimes disaster and confusion follow a change of religion, so it is safer and healthier, perhaps, for people to involve themselves in their own cultural traditions.

My advice to people who wish to convert: First, if one has to follow some faith, it is better to follow one’s own traditional values or religion. Some Westerners who change their religion suddenly, without proper or careful thought, experience confusion. In case you find the Buddhist way or approach more effective and logical, think carefully. Time spent thinking and examining is worthwhile. Finally, if you really feel it is more suitable to your mental disposition, it is okay. An individual has the right to embrace a new religion.

And to digress a bit, when one changes one’s personal religion, there is a tendency to be critical of the original religion in order to justify one’s decision. That’s very bad. It must be avoided. Buddhism may be more suitable for many, yet that does not mean that millions of other people have no values. Those millions do benefit from their religions.

Some practitioners of Buddhism have expectations that are too high, possibly because some of our teachers say that you can achieve Buddhahood within three years. Such a teaching is simply propaganda—you cannot achieve the highest spiritual realization in such a short period, except in exceptional cases. Too many expectations, in the beginning, are wrong. I myself think about the limitless eons that have given me inner strength. One hundred years of a life period is nothing.

Some practitioners cling to one practice without understanding the whole Buddhist system. The transformation of our mind cannot be achieved through just one effort or one practice. Our mind is both very weak and very strong, and it is very sophisticated. When your emphasis is more on learning, you may develop pride. If your emphasis is less on pride, sometimes you lose self-confidence. When you develop more self-confidence, pride also follows.

The mind is very sophisticated, so the antidote to it should also be sophisticated. Think about impermanence; think about eons; think about Buddha’s nature, about the ultimate reality of emptiness; and also think about the mental potential. Think in various ways, and adopt different methods for different situations. That’s the way to shape or change our mind. It takes time. For that reason it is very important to know the basic structure of the Buddhist practice. That’s my advice or suggestion.

How does one discern which practice is best? For example, Buddhist practices depend much on logic, reasoning, and the mind. However, when there are “extraordinary” experiences, one might face a contradiction of sorts and want to dismiss them as “illogical.”

HH: I think, in the beginning, you should simply think of different reasons or different methods that you feel are most effective. That is the only way to judge. Later, at a higher stage, I think that through dreams or sometimes through different kinds of unusual experiences, you can investigate different ways.

To give an explanation from tantra: We can infer certain experiences through the gross levels of our mind and others through the subtle mind. During sleep, in the dream state, our consciousness has reached a subtler level than during the waking state.

This provides us with the opportunity to get a glimpse of certain experiences that are not possible during the waking state when the mind is active at grosser levels. Because of that, one can actually engage in certain investigations during the dream state. Therefore, one can also say that certain things exist that one can only understand through unusual experiences or experiences in dreams.

As I said earlier, all major religions have a single aim—to make good human beings. In this respect, they are the same. Beyond that, there are differences within the different spiritual traditions. One group—for example, Christians—believe that human beings ultimately reach Heaven. However, Buddhism, Jainism, and some ancient Indian traditions accept nirvana, moksha. Within Buddhism, there are different definitions and interpretations of moksha.

The main point is that among the systems that agree on the existence of nirvana and moksha, there are differences. Even among Buddhists, there are differences in the presentation of what is meant by nirvana. Buddhists explain nirvana as the true cessation of all delusions, a mind free of delusions. However, if we were asked whether other systems existed in which such a state could be achieved, the answer would have to be no. In the same way, if we Buddhists were asked if a Buddhist practice existed by which we could achieve going to Heaven—as Christians do—the answer would again have to be no.

A complete system of methods has to be practiced in order to achieve the state of nirvana as explained in Buddhism. There are many people who are not interested in practicing that type of path. There are many people to whom faith appeals more than reason.

Would it be correct to say that to those to whom logical reasoning and investigation appeal, Buddhism is the ideal complete path?

HH: I would agree. However, your question implies that Buddhist teaching presents the path in an exclusively logical way, but if we analyze this, it may not be immediately obvious.

There are different levels of direct experience and perception of both ultimate and relative truth that can be achieved through intense meditative and yogic practices. During the early stages, we can understand such experiences only by using logic and reasoning. We cannot experience them directly. There are only a few people who have had these deep, nuanced, and direct insights of the different levels of truth, for example.

Three types of phenomena exist: some are obvious, some slightly hidden, and others are completely hidden. For example, when we ask how this book came into existence, the usual explanation is that it was produced by causes and conditions. When we ask why it came into existence through such causes and how all these conditions and causes aggregate it, and then, if we delve further, we will come to the point where we will have to say that it was possible due to the karma of the person who has contact with this book. If we investigate even further in order to explain the book’s existence, we might have to go as far as the big bang theory—the beginning of the universe.

The continuity of matter, even simple matter, goes like this, back to the previous stage, then to a stage before that stage, right to the beginning of the whole cosmos. The next question is: what is the reason for the creation of such things? Either God or some different instance is the answer. If the answer were the Creator God, it might solve one problem but create others, create more questions.

There is no beginning; this is endless because of sentient beings, because of the continuity of consciousness. That is the Buddhist explanation. This may not answer all the questions, but it answers some. This theory gives some satisfactory answers, which can be established through reasoning.

For example, certain facts cannot be proved, and we have to rely on the statements of a third person. We know that we are a certain number of years old, but we do not know this through our own experience, nor can we prove it through reasoning. We have to believe our mothers. We have faith in our mothers because there is no reason why they should lie. When we finally find that a person is completely reliable, we accept his or her statements. What is meant by reasoning or faith is to understand the consequences of certain actions that have accumulated over a certain period of time.

If we are to rely on the direct perceptions of a Buddha, we have to be convinced that the Buddha is free of ignorance and obscuration. We realize that there is no reason for him to tell lies and that the statements are not inconsistent and have no contradictions. When these conditions are fulfilled, we believe him and have faith in him.

In previous editions of Success Strategies, we’ve talked about how in order to be successful, we must first define what success means to us, and that means getting CLEAR about what you want, writing it down, and thinking BIG!

Success Begins with Believing. If you are going to be successful in spite of a recession and create the life of your dreams, you have to believe that you are capable of making it happen. You have to believe you have the right stuff, that you are able to pull it off.

You have to believe in yourself. Whether you call it self-esteem, self-confidence, or self-assurance, it is a deep-seeded belief that you have what it takes – the abilities, inner resources, talents, and skills to create your desired results.

Ultimately, you must learn to control your self-talk, eliminate any negative and limiting beliefs, and maintain a constant state of positive expectations.

Control Your Self-Talk
Researchers have found that the average person thinks as many as 50,000 thoughts a day. Sadly, many of those thoughts are negative — I’m not management material… I’ll never lose weight… It doesn’t matter what I do, nothing ever works out for me.

This is what psychologists call victim language. Victim language actually keeps you in a victim state of mind. It is a form of self-hypnosis that lulls you into a belief that you are unlovable and incompetent.

In order to get what you want from life, you need to give up this victim language and start talking to yourself like a winner – I can do it… I know there is a solution… I am smart enough and strong enough to figure this out… Everything I eat helps me maintain my perfect body weight.

You Are Always Programming Your Subconscious Mind
Your subconscious mind is like the crew of a ship. You are it’s captain. It is your job to give the crew orders. And when you do this, the crew takes everything you say literally. The crew (your subconscious) has no sense of humor. It just blindly follows orders. When you say, “Everything I eat goes straight to my hips,” the crew hears that as an order: Take everything she eats, turn it into fat and put it on her hips!

On the other hand, if you say, “Everything I eat helps me maintain my perfect body weight,” the crew will begin to make that into reality by helping you make better food choices, exercise, and maintain the right metabolism rate for you body.

This power of your subconscious mind is the reason you must become very vigilant and pay careful attention to your spoken and internal statements. Unfortunately, most people don’t realize they are committing negative self-talk, which is why it is best to enlist another person — your success partner — in monitoring each other’s speaking. You can have a signal for interrupting each other when you use victim language.

Use Affirmations to Build Self-Confidence
One of the most powerful tools for building self-worth and self-confidence is the repetition of positive statements until they become a natural part of the way you think.

These “affirmations” act to crowd out and replace the negative orders you have been sending your crew (your subconscious mind) all these years. I suggest that you create a list of 10 to 20 statements that affirm your belief in your worthiness and your ability to create the life of your dreams.

Of course, what to believe is up to you, but here are some examples of affirmations that have worked for others in the past:

I am worthy of love, joy and success.

I am smart and make wise choices.

I am loveable and capable.

I create anything I want.

I am able to solve any problem that comes my way.

I can handle anything that life hands me.

I have all the energy I need to do everything I want to do.

I am attracting all the right people into my life.

Believing in Yourself is an Attitude
Believing in yourself is a choice. It’s an attitude you develop over time. It’s now your responsibility to take charge of your own self-concept and your beliefs. It might help to know that the latest brain research now indicates that with enough positive self-talk and positive visualization combined with the proper training, coaching, and practice, anyone can learn to do almost anything.

You must choose to believe that you can do anything you set your mind to – anything at all – because, in fact, you can!

We are all creatures of habit. Everything we repeatedly do, say and think is as a direct result of our entrenched habits. Habits are those actions or reactions which are on auto-pilot, which we do without consciously having to think about them. The success you enjoy in your life, or the lack thereof, is directly related to the nature of your habits while your habits are the product of your beliefs. To enjoy permanent, positive change in your life, you must change your negative beliefs and their associated habits.

Your Life is a Habit
When you examine your daily routine, you will find that most of what you do, say and think on a daily basis is habitual. From the moment you wake up in the morning, your physical and mental routine is already in place and you faithfully follow it with little or no conscious consideration. This applies to all areas of your life. The general state of your relationships reflects your social habits; that of your health and body reflects your eating and exercise habits; that of your bank account reflects your business and money habits and so it goes on. Your habits either serve you or they don’t. They either take you toward your desired outcome or away from it.

Your Habits are the Product of Your Beliefs
Every single one of your thoughts is coloured by your beliefs. You perceive and experience life in accordance with your beliefs. Your actions and words reflect your beliefs. When you believe a certain thing about yourself or anything or anyone, you act, speak and think accordingly. Ultimately, you are what you believe you are. Know that your habits are the children of your beliefs. You cannot expect to permanently change a negative habit into a positive one if its underlying belief remains negative. To successfully and permanently transform your bad habits into positive ones, you must also change your beliefs.

The Chicken or the Egg
Once your habits are firmly in place they serve to reaffirm your beliefs such that it may become difficult to distinguish the parent from the child. Most people try to establish new habits without dealing with the underlying negative belief and so, more often than not, find themselves resorting back to their old habits. In so doing, they lose weeks and even months of concerted effort and usually become discouraged and give up on their hopes of changing their negative habits, not realising that the underlying negative belief is the source of their failed attempt.

Why Diets Fail – An Example
The only reason most diets fail is because the dieter has a negative underlying belief that goes unchecked. If the dieter has a belief such as “I am fat”, then no health or exercise regime will be met with permanent success if that belief remains intact. Sooner or later he or she will take actions to fulfill that negative belief again – they have to because it is their belief. Ironically, even the decision to go on a diet is a fulfillment of the negative “I am fat” belief although it may appear to be a genuine attempt at losing weight. Remember, slim people need not diet.

Align Your Beliefs with Your Habits
While it cannot be ruled out that persistently changing a habit can ultimately lead to a change in the original underlying belief, trying to create a positive habit in the face of a negative belief takes great amounts of will power and success is not guaranteed. To the contrary, once you change the belief associated with the negative habit, then lasting changes in your habits come far more easily. In other words, creating a new, positive habit requires little or no will power when the underlying belief is working with it rather than against it.

There is No Need to Wait
While it is important to change your underlying negative beliefs, you do not have to wait to change them before creating your new, positive habits. Working on the two together is in fact preferable as it speeds up the process. The emphasis here is to change the negative belief, not to wait before changing the habit. Change the two together and success will quickly be yours. Using the example of the dieter, changing his or her underlying belief from “I am fat” to “I am healthy and slim” while at the same time systematically adopting new healthy eating and exercise habits that reflect the new belief, is the surest if not the only route to permanent success.

You Were Not Born With Your Habits
We were all born with a clean habit-slate. Both your “good” and “bad” habits were created from the beliefs that you adopted through your interactions with your teachers, peers, parents and society in general. Without consciously choosing your beliefs and hence your habits, you effectively leave yourself and your life in the hands of general social conditioning. There is no need to allocate blame for your habits or your beliefs – in fact that would only serve to further entrench them. All you need to do is consciously choose those habits that serve you and eliminate those that fail you by changing your beliefs. It is never too late to change.

Habits Inhabit the Subconscious Mind
Everything that you habitually do, say or think today, started off as a single action or thought which was repeated often enough until it was passed down to your subconscious mind where it became a habit. All habits reside at the subconscious level of your mind where you no longer have to consciously think about them. Therefore, in order to permanently change your habits you must learn to programme and re-programme your beliefs at the subconscious level.

Using Creative Visualization to Change Your Reality
The most effective and practical way to consciously access and programme your subconscious mind for success is through creative visualization. It is the fundamental technique underlying reality creation. To put it simply, you can change any negative belief by repeatedly visualizing yourself feeling and experiencing the new positive belief and imagining yourself effortlessly repeating the actions which you desire to become your habits and are aligned with that belief. You will soon find that your actions and thoughts in your day-to-day waking life begin to reflect your new beliefs until such time that they too become habitual in nature.

Your Will Power is Your Guide
You will know to what degree your underlying negative beliefs have been replaced by gauging how much will power you have to use. Any time you find yourself having to use significant amounts of will power to do something positive that you know serves your desired outcome, then there is probably still a major conflict between your actions and an underlying negative belief. Anything you do or say that is aligned with your beliefs, whether “positive” or “negative”, requires very little will power and is effortless.

This is not to say that some or even great amounts of will power will not be necessary at the beginning of your efforts to change your negative beliefs and adopt new, positive habits. However, will power is the domain of the conscious mind whereas your aim is to transform your actions into habits of the subconscious mind, which is the domain that knows nothing of will power and needs nothing of the sort to carry out its actions.

Habits Are Intended to Serve You
The fact that you can repeat a task often enough until you can perform it with no longer having to consciously think about it, is testament to your mind power. This ability frees up your conscious mind to continuously process and learn new information that serves your success until the associated actions become habitual and so the process can be repeated. Having said this, most people are inadvertently at the service of their beliefs and habits because they never consciously chose them in the first place. Your beliefs are yours to choose and your habits are yours to create. Resolve now to make your habits serve you and your success. Ultimately, you have the power to create your ideal life.

No words capture the relationship between your beliefs, your habits and your destiny as precisely as those of Mahatma Gandhi:

“Your beliefs become your thoughts, Your thoughts become your words, Your words become your actions, Your actions become your habits, Your habits become your values, Your values become your destiny.“

In a nutshell, we are all habitual creatures. The state of your life is largely a reflection of those actions, words and thoughts which you repeat without any conscious involvement on your part. In other words, your life is a reflection of your habits and your habits are a product of your beliefs. Most people try to change their negative habits with no consideration for the underlying negative belief and so meet with little permanent success. By reprogramming your beliefs at the subconscious level, you give yourself the freedom to create new habits that effortlessly add to your success and to eliminate those that don’t.

An Intimate Interview with Author Bruce H. Lipton, Ph.D.

Q: What is it like for you to be pressing the edges of the conventional, entrenched wisdom of the medical/health care field?

A: I am on an amazing journey that is filled with exhilarating life experiences expressing both sweet and sour consequences. On the sweet side is the fact that I am having the most exciting time of my life!! My research revealed a revolutionary understanding of how life “worked” twenty years ago and this awareness is now beginning to be recognized by leading edge science. The beautiful part is that with a twenty year head start over my former colleagues, I have not only benefited by applying this empowering awareness in creating the joyous life I am experiencing, but I have been able to extend that knowledge to reveal how the world can thrive and evolve.

The sweetness of that knowledge is also where the “sour” part comes in to the picture. Our conventional world is engaged in a ruthless survival of the fittest competition, based upon science’s endorsement of Darwinian theory, a belief that emphasizes, “life is a struggle for survival.” In contrast, the new biology reveals a completely different understanding of our place in the world.

Science is now recognizing that we are an integral part of a giant living community, collectively referred to as Gaia. The new science underscores the fact that our survival is based upon the cooperation of all the organisms in the biosphere. Unfortunately, our social consciousness, shaped by Darwinian science, is so destructive to the environment that it has already precipitated the planet’s sixth mass extinction—which of course threatens the survival of humanity.

Yet there is also good news. Just as some terminal cancer patients undergo a spontaneous remission, the living Gaia can do the same. As with those cancer patients, all we need to do to save our world is change our beliefs, and this is precisely the consequence of the evolving new science. My book, The Biology of Belief: Unleashing the Power of Consciousness, Matter and Miracles, provides an easy to understand explanation of how our thoughts and mind create both our internal (biological) and external (social) life experiences.

Q: What about your discoveries has most profoundly affected your life and the way you live it?

A: In the first instant of acquiring my new insights into how cells worked, I was completely transformed. As a conventional scientist, I taught my students that genes controlled life and that we were essentially “victims” of our heredity. When I first recognized that the brain of the cell was the cell membrane, rather than genes, I was blown away, for the mechanism revealed that life was controlled by signals from the “environment.” The significance of this finding is that the identity of the “self,” distinguishing one individual from another, would also represent an environmental (external) signal.

If the cell (organism) dies, its identity signal is still present in the environment. At that moment of awareness, I realized that we have an externalized “identity” (spirit) and are immortal. The realization of a transcendent “identity” brought an amazing sense of peace into my life, for I had truly lost the greatest of all fears…death. It was the most profound experience for me, a non-spiritual scientist that wasn’t even looking for that particular understanding.

Subsequently, my life was transformed when I realized how my developmental experiences programmed my genes and behavior. With this knowledge I was able to rewrite limiting, self-sabotaging beliefs that were keeping me from experiencing the health, love and joy we all seek. I have actively created a wonderful healthy, fulfilling life and supporting environment. I love my days, sleep like a baby and enjoy life without the necessity of taking a single pharmaceutical drug!

One of the most important things I learned through my research was that human beings were biologically modeled after the anatomy and physiology of single cells. Cells are in a sense, miniature people. My research provided insight into understanding how the fifty trillion cells that comprise the human body can live in health and harmony under the skin. I was able to apply the fundamental principles of cellular life to the way I was living my life with great success.

In the words of old hippie philosophy, I was “cleaning up my own backyard before cleaning up the world.” I learned to live better and healthier on less money, not only through modeling my efficiency upon cellular life, but also because my personal joy and satisfaction in life was no longer linked to consumerism. My pleasures are now directly derived through my appreciation of Gaia, my family and my community.

Q: If you were to choose one area that you feel is your greatest challenge in sharing your discoveries, what would that be?

A: As mentioned, the new science reveals that our preoccupation with competition and consumerism is compromising our species and our environment. There is a lot of money trying to keep us from evolving. Corporate and government interests, playing on our Darwinian fears, are undermining our civilization and environment. Simply, self-empowerment is not in the interest of those whose focus is to “control” civilization.

Wars, social and moral decay, faltering education, famine and much of our disease will be eliminated when the new science becomes common knowledge. The self-empowerment offered by the new science is a threat to those organizations that profit from war and ill health. Among others, these organizations include the military-industrial complex, the larger biomedical-pharmaceutical industry and those fundamentalist religions that encourage violence and self-limitation in seeking their ends.

Presently, these organizations are spending vast sums of money, enough to solve civilization’s problems, to “control” and limit our abilities via the news, magazines and television programming. Consequently, it is a difficult endeavor to fight the tide of self-limiting, self-defeating propaganda sponsored by the moneyed interests. Yet, in recent years I have noticed vast changes in consciousness by people who intuitively know we are on the wrong track and are looking for a course correction.

Fortunately, books like The Biology of Belief, as well as a number of other new works of science, are aimed at introducing the mass reading audience to the life-changing power of their conscious mind. I believe we are approaching a threshold, like the notion of the hundredth monkey, where the new science will appear to spontaneously change the direction of civilization and save us from our excesses.

Q: When you consider your existing science and what other discoveries undoubtedly lie ahead, who do you believe human beings are capable of becoming?

A: We will learn that if there is a “heaven,” it is right here on Earth. We will learn how to recreate the proverbial Garden of Eden. In this new awareness we will be able to guide our own stem cells to renew our lives, without the use of pharmaceutical agents. Like breathairian’s, we will also learn to capture energy directly from the environment and will no longer be dependent upon the massive quantities of food we now think we need to eat.

This awareness should provide us with a natural lifespan of at least 120-140 years, while simultaneously taking the pressure off the environment to feed us. Interestingly, current research reveals that we can double the life of laboratory organisms by simply curtailing their metabolic intake.

The new science provides insight into how we manifest our reality. Since most people are looking for happiness, joy and health, their collective vision can create such a reality. Such a culture would be one that does not encourage disharmony and disease. That’s already a good start in revitalizing Eden.

Q: When you witness the range of responses to your material – from great joy to outrage, no doubt! – what is it that keeps you moving forward?

A: The simplest answer is that I have found Heaven on Earth by personally applying the principles of the new science to the way I carry out my own life. I love my job of bringing this new science to the public, for in my travels, I have seen many people use this information to “taken control” of their own lives. There is nothing more joyous than to see an individual overcome physical and emotional adversity through self-empowerment. And on a more self-serving level, the more people create harmony in their world, the more harmony I experience in my world.

Through our beliefs, we’re the bridge between reality and all that we could ever imagine. It’s the power of what we truly believe about ourselves that gives life to our highest aspirations and greatest dreams, the things that make the universe as it is. And if the whole universe sounds like a place too big to even think about, that’s okay – we can start by simply thinking about ourselves and our everyday world.

Consider your relationship to the room you’re sitting in. While you’re thinking, ask yourself these questions: What role did I play to get myself here? How did I arrive at this precise place in this precise moment? Then consider how time, space, energy, and matter have all converged in a mysterious and precious way to bring you to this very moment, and ask:

Is it just an accident? Are you merely a fluke of biology, energy, and matter that just happened to converge in this instant? If your answer to this question is No! then you’re really going to like what comes next. Because if you honestly believe that you’re more than an accident of time, space, and energy, then do you really think that you would find yourself in a world of so many quantum possibilities without a way to choose from among those possibilities?

To acknowledge that we play a central role in how our everyday reality turns out is to acknowledge that we’re somehow interacting with essence of the universe. For such a thing to be possible, it means that we must also recognize the following:

Our beliefs have the power to change the flow of events in the universe – literally to interrupt and redirect time, matter, and space and the events that occur within them.

When we choose to embark upon a different career path or a new relationship or to heal a life-threatening disease, we’re really rewriting the code of reality. If we think about all the implications of all the decisions we make in each moment of every day, it becomes clear how our seemingly little choices can have effects that reach far beyond our personal lives. In a universe where each experience is built upon the outcome of previous ones, it’s obvious that all are necessary. There are no “wasted” choices, because every event and decision is required. Each must be precisely where it is before the others can follow.

Suddenly, our choice to help someone who’s lost in the airport, for example, or our willingness to understand our anger before we unleash it on those who don’t deserve it takes on new meaning. Each choice sets into motion a ripple current that will affect not only our lives, but also the world beyond.

So, think of all the things that had to happen from a time before you were even born for you to be in the precise place that you are in this moment. Think of the unfathomable number of tiny particles of star dust that originated with the birth of the universe. Contemplate where those particles have been, and consider how they’ve come together in just the right way to become the “you” that you are today. In doing so, you find it becomes abundantly clear that something – some intelligent force – is holding the particles of you together right now, as you read the words on this page.

That force is what makes our beliefs so powerful. If we can communicate with it, then we can change how the particles of “us” behave in the world. We can rewrite the code of our reality.

A growing number of mainstream scientists are now drawing parallels between the way the universe works and the output of a huge and incredibly ancient computer simulation – a literal virtual reality. In this comparison, our everyday world is thought of as a simulation that operates in much the way the “holodeck” did in Star Trek: The Next Generation, a TV series that first aired in 1987. It’s an experience that’s created within the container of a greater reality for the purpose of mastering the conditions of that reality.

Taking this just one step further, we can imagine that if we understand the rules of this ancient and ongoing reality program, then we can understand how to change the conditions of fear, war, and disease that have hurt us in the past. In such a way of thinking, everything takes on a whole new meaning. As speculative and science fiction–ish as such a proposition may sound, it’s only one of the implications that stem directly from this powerful new way of thinking of the universe.
